Uptight was lucky enough to be featured in 'Outrageous Bride' Magazine, covering Uptights return, after a few years of due to personal reasons, then Covid, along side Uptights close friend and colleague, Bex of Bexbrides, Boohoo glam wedding dresses.
'The recovery tour....' How do you bring back to life two independent bridal businesses after 18 months of COVID hell and the breakdowns that followed...? Two established independent alternative bridal designers, Bex of Bexbrides and Janice of Uptight Clothing, both took a massive hit during the past 18 months, Bexbrides, a vintage, Boohoo designer from the north, suffered from the Covid closures to the point of melt down, after her 100 plus brides a year were all postponed, was forced to close for 34 weeks, the despair and distress of the emotional and financial losses taking its toll. Janice of Uptight clothing, a couture corset wedding dress maker of the south, started lock down already on an Uptight sabbatical, after a personal journey of ill health...the NHS scandal, the Infected Blood inquiry, being born with Hepatitis C , the treatment and its caused infertility and recovery... followed by lock down gain and loss of their adopted daughter, then her husband coming out as transgender...you literally could not make this up... So two alternative bridal designers, best of friends, unable to see each other for over 18 months, on their knees, dealing with personal trauma and covid lock down, how do you get back up from all that??? How do you get your mojo back??? If you are Bex, you start a support group for Bridal shops and designers to fight for the grants we were entitled to as close contact but didn't get and end up being asked to speak on behalf of your industry at a All Party Political if zoom meeting with the relevant Ministers and causing her hair to fall out!
If you are Janice You loose your shit, hit rock bottom...buy a caravan in Dorset...and spend a few months immersed with the love of friends you haven't been able to see for over a year, dressing up, getting up and sunrise shooting...eating good food, swimming in the sea, bring each other back to life with fun and laughter and the precious company of friends, women who raise each other up, support each other, helping each other come back to life, mojos rising...resurrecting each others passion for our bridal businesses, that got lost somewhere along the ride that was the past few years. Bex, finally got chance to come down and be one of those precious friends, who came to Dorset to heal with Janice and her magic frocks! They had a ball, modelling each others gowns and photographing them on the beaches of the stunning Jurassic coast, becoming a renowned sight on the Charmouth beach at sunset. They spent the evenings catching the last of the evening light for the photo shoots, changing in the car park...then post shoot, having a invigorating swimming in the autumn sea, still warm from the summer sun. Followed by a night of home cooked food and gin, our favourite album on repeat, LP 'lost on you', their now comeback anthem!
When life and all it entails...loss, lock down and Covid, there's nothing more empowering than women, who come together, joining forces, their shared passion for the creative work they both love, and the love of each other. Getting each other inspired again, bouncing off each other, encouraging, supporting, that's what women in business should do more off, as when we life each other up, rather than pulling each other down. We all win. So how do you get back up after falling so far down...? Surround yourself with friends with the same passions, feed each others bodies and souls...ignite each others fires, and blaze like bright souls you know you always were. That's how you bring back to life two bridal businesses, two friends from the brink. A caravan, in Dorset, in a corset, with gin, ice cream, and a whole heap of love and laughter.
It's been a tough few years for independent bridal designers Bex of Bexbrides and Janice of Uptight clothing, but with their renewed vigour and energy, new alternative bridal designs for 2022/3 are bursting out of Bex's and Uptight's heads quicker than they can make them....there so much catching up to do after the wedding void that was 20/21....
